Nadat haar moeder en stiefvader gearresteerd zijn besluit de 15-jarige Vanessa Lutz op zoek te gaan naar haar grootmoeder die ze nooit ontmoet heeft. Onderweg krijgt ze autopech, en wordt ze opgepikt door Bob Wolverton, die werkt op een school voor jongens met problemen. Langzaam wint Bob Vanessa's vertrouwen, en begint ze te vertellen over het seksuele misbruik door haar stiefvader. Dan realiseert Vanessa zich echter dat Bob een beruchte snelwegmoordenaar is.
