Henry Chinaski is dichter en alcoholist, en spendeert zijn dagen in de kroeg. Op een dag ontmoet hij Wanda. Zij is ook alcoholist, en Henry wordt verliefd op haar. Even lijkt het erop dat Henry's gedichten succesvol worden, maar zijn beroemdheid is van korte duur.
