In een wereld geplaagd door wezens die bekend staan als Kaiju, streefde Kafka Hibino ernaar om dienst te nemen bij The Defense Force. Hij belooft dat hij samen met zijn jeugdvriendin Mina Ashiro in dienst zal treden. Al snel neemt het leven ze op verschillende manieren mee. Terwijl hij bezig is met opruimen na Kaiju-gevechten, ontmoet Kafka Reno Ichikawa. Reno's vastberadenheid om zich bij de Defensiemacht aan te sluiten wakkert Kafka's belofte aan om zich bij Mina aan te sluiten en de mensheid te beschermen.
