De jonge Vincenzo Cortino, zoon van een Siciliaanse postbode, bezorgt een pakketje voor zijn vader en ziet per ongeluk iets dat hij niet had mogen zien. Hij wordt de stad uit gesmokkeld en probeert een schip naar Amerika te bereiken. Daar aangekomen weet Vincenzo zich op te werken naar de top van de Mafia. De hoofden van de andere families willen Don Cortino echter uit de weg ruimen.
