Akeem (Murphy) is de kroonprins van Zamunda, een koninkrijk in Afrika. Akeem is opgegroeid in ongekende luxe met bedienden voor alles wat hij zich kan wensen. Zelfs zijn schoenen hoeft hij niet te strikken. Wanneer hij op 21-jarige leeftijd wordt voorgesteld aan zijn bruid weet hij na een kort gesprek dat zij niet de ware is. Hij vraagt zijn vader toestemming om naar Amerika te gaan om daar een bruid te zoeken. Aangekomen in Amerika neemt de steenrijke prins samen met zijn bediende Semmi (Hall) een arme levensstijl aan. Akeem wil namelijk een vrouw zoeken die op hem valt vanwege zijn persoonlijkheid en niet vanwege zijn geld.
