De joodse Charlotte Salomon is een jong meisje uit Berlijn. Ze staat op het punt volwassen te worden wanneer de Tweede Wereldoorlog voor de deur staat. Ze is ontzettend getalenteerd en beschikt over een fantasierijke verbeelding waarmee ze hoopt kunstenaar te worden. Maar door de huidige situatie komt haar droom - en haar leven - in gevaar waardoor ze Berlijn voor Zuid-Frankrijk verruilt. Daar herneemt ze haar passie en vindt ze de liefde. Wanneer een familietragedie een geheim blootlegt, krijgt Charlotte de idee om haar levensverhaal op het doek weer te geven.
