Ella Blake, een stop-motion-animator die worstelt om haar demonen onder controle te houden na het verlies van haar aanmatigende moeder, begint aan de creatie van een film die het strijdtoneel wordt voor haar geestelijke gezondheid. Terwijl Ella's geest begint te breken, gaan de personages in haar project een eigen leven leiden.
