Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) heeft zijn hele leven op de Mexicaanse ranch van zijn vader gewerkt. Wanneer de ranch in financiële problemen komt verschijnt Armando's jongere broer Raul (Diego Luna) met zijn nieuwe verloofde Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez). Het lijkt er op dat Rauls succes als internationale zakenman de redding voor de ranch kan betekenen als hij belooft alle schulden op zich te nemen. Maar wanneer Armando voor Sonia valt en Rauls zakelijk activiteiten niet geheel legaal blijken te zijn breekt de hel los, en komen ze in oorlog met de meest gevreesde drugsbaron van Mexico, de machtige Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal).
