In een samenleving in de nabije toekomst wordt de bevolking gecontroleerd via gewelddadige reality tv-shows. Als laatste redmiddel om zijn stervende dochter te redden, doet huisvader Ben Richards mee aan de kijkcijferhit 'The Running Man' onder de charmante, maar meedogenloze leiding van producer Dan Killian. Het doel van deze dodelijke spelshow: 30 dagen overleven terwijl je wordt opgejaagd door professionele hunters die zijn ingehuurd om de kandidaat te doden. Elke stap wordt uitgezonden en elke dag langer in leven blijven, levert meer prijzengeld op. Bens koppigheid, instinct en vechtlust maken hem onverwacht tot een publieksfavoriet … én tot een bedreiging voor het hele systeem.
