Rosa is een jong rebels meisje dat met haar grootmoeder en haar oom in een afgelegen deel van Calabrië woont, in het uiterste zuiden van Italië. De vroegtijdige dood van haar moeder toen Rosa nog een kind was, werpt een sombere schaduw op haar huidige leven.
