De kern van dit waargebeurde verhaal is Damien Oliver, een jonge jockey die zijn enige broer verliest bij een tragisch race-ongeluk, wat op een angstaanjagende wijze de manier weerspiegelt waarop hun vader 27 jaar eerder stierf. Na een reeks ontmoedigende nederlagen te hebben geleden, werkt Damien samen met de Ierse trainer Dermot Weld en triomfeert hij op de Melbourne Cup van 2002 in een van de meest opwindende finales in de sportgeschiedenis.
