Brighton, Engeland, 1880. Pearl is de gefrustreerde echtgenote van de regelmatig dronken en gewelddadige kroegeigenaar Joe Bond. Pearl is op zoek naar een makkelijke manier om van haar man af te komen. Ze zoekt contact met de zoon van de apotheker Sutton. Deze apothekerszoon gebruikt Pearl als medeplichtige om haar man te vergiftigen. Ze wil dat hij een gif samenstelt, dat niet valt te detecteren.
