Het godvergeten kleine stadje Karmack ergens in de Verenigde Staten wordt geteisterd door een ware epidemie van ongevallen en sterfgevallen. De gemeenschap belandt in een depressie die zo diep is dat ze een tussenpersoon nodig hebben om op professionele wijze meer van het slechte nieuws over te brengen. Frank Farrelli, een stille kalme man, lijkt de geschikte persoon en neemt er de baan aan van die tussenpersoon.
