De film vertelt het levensverhaal van Louis de Pointe du Lac. In 1791 heeft hij na het verliezen van zijn vrouw geen zin meer om te leven. Hij wordt door de vampier Lestat gebeten en deze geeft hem de keuze om als vampier verder te leven, of een langzame dood te sterven.
