De jonge Shuhei, zoon van een concertpianist, verhuist met zijn moeder van Tokio naar een klein stadje omdat er voor zijn grootmoeder moet worden gezorgd. Shuhei wil zelf pianist worden en wordt daarom gepest op zijn nieuwe school. Hij wordt uitgedaagd om een mysterieuze, kapotte piano in het bos te bespelen. Zijn arme klasgenoot Kai neemt hem mee naar de piano, maar het blijkt dat Shuhei ondanks zijn opleiding geen geluid uit hem kan krijgen. In schril contrast met Kai, onder wiens handen de piano tot leven komt...
