1917. De tsaar is vermoord en de revolutie gewonnen door het proletariaat. Eén van de leiders van de revolutie noemt zich voortaal Stalin (staal) en zal in enkele jaren zichzelf aan het hoofd van een totalitaire staat stellen. Zijn gezin heeft erg te lijden onder zijn paranoïde machtswellust, en duizende onschuldigen zullen sterven onder zijn bewind. De vrouw die zijn dochter zou worden, vertelt het verhaal tot zijn dood in 1953.
