Rechercheur Tess Borski groeide op in het Noord-Franse mijnstadje Courrières. Daar vond in 1906 een grote mijnramp plaats, waarbij honderden kompels levend werden begraven. Nu keert Tess terug naar Courrières om er samen met commissaris François Dubois een reeks vreemde misdrijven te onderzoeken. Naarmate hun onderzoek vordert, beginnen Tess en François te vermoeden dat hun zaak verband houdt met de ramp van 1906.
