1977, landelijk Georgia. Christmas Flint is een buitenbeentje dat droomt van het leven in de ruimte. Dan wordt er een nationale competitie georganiseerd die haar een kans geeft om haar droom te verwezenlijken en om opgenomen te worden op de Golden Record van de NASA (een grammofoonopname die meegestuurd wordt met de twee Voyager-ruimtesondes). Ze werft een geïmproviseerd gezelschap Birdie Scouts en maakt vriendschappen die een leven lang duren, en langer.
