Ivan is een 27-jarige, vriendelijke zilverrug gorilla die achter een glazen wand in het winkelcentrum woont. Hij is eraan gewend geraakt dat mensen hem continu gadeslaan. Hoe zijn leven voorheen was, in de jungle, weet hij niet meer. In plaats daarvan houdt hij zich bezig met het kijken van televisie, schilderen en zijn vrienden Stella (een olifant) en Bob (een zwerfhond). Wanneer Ruby, een babyolifantje dat onlangs haar moeder in het wild is kwijtgeraakt, bij hen komt wonen, begint Ivan zijn woning en zijn kunst met andere ogen te zien. Ruby bevrijden wordt al snel zijn nieuwe doel in het leven.
Nee, helaas is De Enige Echte Ivan nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
