Susan Essex leeft alleen voor haar man Matthew en dochter Justine. Dan betrapt ze Matthew met een andere vrouw en een scheiding is het gevolg. Samen met Justine probeert Susan een nieuw leven op te bouwen, maar Justine maakt het er niet gemakkelijker op. Als een schoolvriendin van Justine wordt vermoord en zij een verdachte blijkt te zijn, wordt de relatie tussen moeder en dochter danig op de proef gesteld.
