In 1949 waren alle ogen gericht op schrijfster, filosofe en inspiratiebron Ayn Rand en haar levensvisie. Vooral in haar bizarre liefdesleven kwam haar filosofie duidelijk naar voren. Ayn (Helen Murren) voelt zich sterk aangetrokken tot haar briljante, jonge en knappe protégee Nathariel (Eric Stoltz). Overtuigd van het feit dat ze ieders hart en ziel kan beheersen overtuigt ze haar man (Peter Fonda) en de vrouw van haar nieuwe liefde Barbara (Julie Delpy) ervan dat zij akkoord moeten gaan met een langdurige relatie tussen Ayn en haar protégee terwijl ze allemaal gewoon getrouwd blijven. Terwijl de geliefden zegevieren en de echtgenoten lijden houdt de relatie 15 jaar stand, totdat de protégee geïnteresseerd raakt in een jonge studente van hem... Een waargebeurd verhaal over hartstocht en bedrog, gebaseerd op het boek Barbara, de vrouw van Nathariel.
