Dit verhaal gunt een kijkje in het leven van een leuk modaal stel in Londen, Shirley en Cyril. En ook in dat van zijn moeder, die snel oud wordt en steeds vergeetachtiger, moeder's akelige, bovenmodale buren, Cyrils hooghartige zus Valerie en haar flirtende man. Shirley wil een baby, maar Cyril, die Marx leest en een perfecte wereld wil, is daar tegen. Cyrils moeder sluit zichzelf buiten en moet haar verwaande buren om hulp vragen. Moeder wordt bijna 70 jaar en Valerie organiseert een feest voor haar, wat van begin tot eind een ramp wordt. Shirley probeert de boel te redden en zij en Cyril moeten wel hun afstandelijkheid aan de kant zetten.
