Op tweejarige leeftijd zou Gerald McLoy op de leeftijd moeten zijn waarop hij zijn eerste woordjes zegt. Maar als de eerste “woordjes” die uit zijn mond komen meer klinken als een gebroken veer - “boing boing” - is zijn nerveuze vader bang dat Gerald nooit goed zal praten en deze ongewone geluiden zal blijven maken. Zijn vader roept medische hulp in maar het lijkt niet te helpen…
