Judith Nelson stopt met haar medische studie om te gaan trouwen. Jaren later verlaat haar man, een psychiater, haar om bij een andere dokter te kunnen zijn. Diep gefrustreerd woont ze nu alleen in haar pand in New York, op zoek naar de zin van het leven. Pat Francato heeft ook een probleemvol leven: gokschulden en de tragische dood van zijn dochter. Op een dag ontmoeten de twee elkaar in een goeie bui en hun vriendschap groeit. Ze kunnen elkaar helpen om op de been te blijven, maar 1 fout zou wel eens het einde kunnen betekenen van hun vriendschap, die ze zorgvuldig hebben opgebouwd.
