Het verhaal speelt in de jaren '30 in de kringen van de Britse aristocratie. Tony en Brenda Last wonen in een geweldig landgoed en verwelkomen er een kennis die zijn kapitaal heeft verloren. Als dank begint deze man een affaire met Brenda. Tony heeft niets door totdat Brenda hem confronteert met het feit dat ze een scheiding wil.
