Sinds de dood van zijn ouders woont de 16-jarige Collin Fenwick bij twee ongehuwde tantes in een klein stadje in Alabama. Hoewel een van hen, Verena Talbo, een geldbeluste zakenvrouw die de meeste winkels in het stadje bezit, volkomen afstandelijk blijft, ontwikkelt hij al snel een voorliefde voor haar wereldvreemde maar hartelijke zus, Dolly. Het bescheiden verkoopsucces van hun kruidenmedicijn brengt een al lang sluimerende vete tussen de zussen tot een hoogtepunt. Wanneer Dolly weigert het medicijn in een fabriek te laten produceren, ontstaat er een vernederende ruzie. Diezelfde avond verhuist Dolly met Collin naar een oud boomhut buiten de stad, waar ze niet lang alleen blijven...
