In de jaren '40 groeit Collin (Furlong) op bij de nichten van zijn vader: de strenge, Verena (Spacek) en de lieve Dolly (Piper Laurie). Op een dag is Dolly het regime van haar zus beu en loopt ze weg, samen met Collin en huishoudster en vriendin Catherine.
