In 1884 slagen de musicalschrijvers Gilbert en Sullivan met hun laatste productie Princess Ida er niet in om het Londense publiek te imponeren. Sullivan besluit om zich op de serieuze musicals te richten, maar hij staat nog onder contract en moet samen met Gilbert nog een opera produceren. Sullivan bezoekt een Japanse tentoonstelling. Hier doet hij de nodige inspiratie op en besluit om Mikado te schrijven. Dit wordt een van hun meest populaire producties.
