De 12-jarige Rusty (Carr) ontvluchtte tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog Engeland om in de Verenigde Staten een aantal prettige jaren door te brengen bij pleegouders. Na de oorlog gaat ze terug naar haar vaderland, maar kan niet goed aarden.
