Californië, 1849. Tijdens de heersende goudkoorts ruilt de goudzoeker Daniel Dillon zijn vrouw Elena en dochter Hope in bij de mede-gouddelver Burn. Dillon krijgt daardoor Burns goudmijn in bezit. Maar bijna 20 jaar later, wanneer hij rijker is dan hij ooit heeft durven dromen, krijgt Dillon in zijn stadje Kingdom Come niet alleen bezoek van landmeters voor de eventuele aanleg van een spoorlijn waardoor hij nog rijker denkt te worden, maar ook van zijn dochter Hope en zijn inmiddels ernstig zieke vrouw Elena, die een deel van zijn rijkdom komen opeisen.
