Als het verminkte lijk van een jong meisje wordt ontdekt, valt de verdenking op de opgeroeide zoon van de plaatselijke kinderarts en haar artistieke echtgenoot. Hun zoon is spoorloos en de angstige ouders gaan wanhopig op zoek naar de waarheid terwijl de plaatselijke bevolking steeds vijandiger wordt in de overtuiging dat de zoon schuldig is.
