In de negentiende eeuw leeft de wees Anne Lister met haar tante en oom. Deze laatste willen zo snel mogelijk dat ze trouwt en gelukkig is, maar ze weten niets van haar geaardheid af. Daardoor schrijft Anne alles in code in haar dagboeken. Haar grote liefde Mariana waarmee ze een serieuze relatie heeft, besluit plots om met een weduwnaar te trouwen en Anne voelt zich volledig bedrogen. Toch bezoekt Mariana haar op en bedrijven ze de liefde keer op keer. Mariana belooft keer op keer dat ze haar man zal verlaten of dat ze toch op zijn minst samen zullen zijn als haar man sterft. Toch beseft Anne dat dit loze beloftes zijn, mede door haar ex-vriendin Tib. Door omstandigheden leert ze Anne Walker kennen die ervoor zorgt dat haar leven een nieuwe wending krijgt.
