Ergens in de 19e eeuw. Solomon Northup is zwart, maar vrij en verdient zijn brood als timmerman. Bovendien is hij een getalenteerde muzikant. Op een dag wordt hij aangesproken door een groepje mannen die hem uitnodigen om op een feest te kunnen spelen. Helaas is het een list en Solomon wordt gekidnapt om als slaaf te werken.
