Tijdens de 30-jarige oorlog is Duitsland in een slagveld veranderd. Waar de leraar Vogel ook komt, hij ziet niets dan verwoesting. In de bergen vindt hij een paradijselijk Alpen-dorp dat door plunderende soldaten op de korrel wordt genomen. Vogel weet hun hoofdman er van te overtuigen dat het slimmer is het dorp als winterkwartier te gebruiken. Vogel treedt op als bemiddelaar, maar na de winter ontstaat er onrust als de hoofdman Vogel benoemt tot commandant.
