Lila roept de hulp in van de in het leven teleurgestelde privé-detective Moses Wine. Haar baas, kandidaat gouverneur van Californie, is momenteel het slachtoffer van een lastercampagne met valse getuigenissen en getruceerde foto's. Zij vermoeden dat dit het werk is van de linkse extremist Eppis, een oud-studiegenoot van Moses.
