Een jonge jongen met een verstoord gezinsleven wordt 'uitverkoren' en hij komt midden in een grote oorlog van yōkai (een klasse mythologische wezens) terecht, waar hij een groep vriendelijke yōkai ontmoet die tijdens zijn reis zijn metgezellen worden. Nu moet hij vechten om zijn vrienden te beschermen en de wereld van de yōkai te bevrijden van onderdrukking. De yōkai vinden hun oorsprong in de Japanse folklore en variëren van schattig en dwaas tot verontrustend.
