Dirk Trent is een zwaarlijvige, kettingrokende privédetective die zijn geld verdient door kleine oplichters en overspelige echtgenoten te ontmaskeren. Tijdens een van deze klussen stuit Trent op een bizarre moord. Deze ontdekking test zijn middelmatige talent tot het uiterste.
