John Barrington ontsnapt uit een krankzinnigengesticht en vindt toevlucht op de ranch van de kalkoenhouderij van Ezra Thompson. Barrington, die last heeft van geheugenverlies, vindt een deel van zijn herinneringen terug en hij gaat op zoek naar de waarheid omtrent de vraag of hij echt zijn geliefde heeft vermoord en of hij eigenlijk wel krankzinnig is. Hij reist naar Los Angeles om zijn oudste en beste vriend te bezoeken: psychiater David Dunbar, die een getuige was van Barrington's misdaad. Dunbar herhaalt zijn verhaal en overtuigt Barrington dat hij de misdaad begaan heeft. Vervolgens licht hij de politie in. Thompson, Connie Carter en anderen zijn echter niet helemaal overtuigd van Barrington's schuld.
