Dichter Siegfried Sassoon was een complexe man die de verschrikkingen van de gevechten in de Eerste Wereldoorlog overleefde en werd onderscheiden voor zijn moed, maar die een uitgesproken criticus werd van de voortzetting van de oorlog. Zijn poëzie was geïnspireerd door zijn ervaringen aan het westfront. Aanbeden door leden van de aristocratie en sterren van de literaire wereld en toneelwereld in Londen, begon hij affaires met verschillende mannen terwijl hij probeerde in het reine te komen met zijn homoseksualiteit.
