Het is 1873. Na 18 jaar komt hij weer in haar leven, een man die slaaf was op dezelfde plantage. Bij voorbaat verontschuldigt ze zich voor haar huis, en als hij de eerste stap binnenzet merkt hij dat het spookt in huis. Haar overleden oudste dochter is nooit groot geworden en kan gooien met voorwerpen als ze humeurig is. Niet lang na zijn komst houdt de overleden dochter zich echter stil, en haar plaats in huis wordt ingenomen door een vreemdelinge die zich aandient. Vanwege dier interesse in verhalen van vroeger en achtergestelde ontwikkeling is ze ook een welkome aanvulling in het leven van zowel de moeder als de nog levende moeder.
