Troy Maxson, een Afro-Amerikaanse vader, werkt bij een schoonmaakbedrijf in Pittsburgh. Hij probeert een goede echtgenoot en vader te zijn, maar de verloren droom vreet nog steeds aan hem, wat ervoor zorgt dat hij een besluit neemt dat zijn familie verscheurt.
