Fernando is een 35-jarige ornitholoog (vogelkundige). Hij besluit de rivier af te varen in een kajak, in de hoop om uiterst zeldzame zwarte ooievaars te vinden. Terwijl hij wordt afgeleid door de schoonheid van het landschap, wordt Fernando overboord gegooid door de stroming en bereikt zijn onbeweeglijke, bebloede lichaam de oever.
