Fielding Pierce leeft het leventje van een politicus in wording: hij dient in de kustwacht om Vietnam te vermijden, en in 1973 start hij z'n rechtenstudie. Hij wordt verliefd op Sarah, wiens leven in het teken staat van het helpen van anderen. Helaas wordt ze gedood in een explosie. Negen jaar later wordt Fielding ineens overspoeld met gedachten over en visioenen van zijn verloren liefde.
