In een broeierige cel in Somalië wordt een Engelsman, James Moore genaamd, vastgehouden en ondervraagd door jihadisten die hem als een mogelijke spion zien. Ver weg, in de donkere dieptes van de oceaan, bevindt de Frans-Australische Danielle Flinders zich op ontdekkingsreis. Gedurende de levensbedreigende beproevingen die beiden moeten doorstaan putten ze kracht uit een diepe emotionele connectie, herinneringen aan hun intense, gepassioneerde liefde die zich enkele maanden eerder voltrokken heeft.
