Jim Fleg is een misdadiger die gespecialiseerd is in het doorverkopen van zeldzame boeken. In het bijzijn van een nep detective, Hollis, gaat Jim Fleg een bibliotheek binnen om een waardevol document met het handschrift van Shakespeare te stelen. Jim Flegs criminele vriendin, Myra Blandy, besluit om hem te helpen met deze misdaad, totdat ze erachter komt dat hij moorddadig begint te worden. Ze roept de hulp in van detective Hal McByrne, om Jim op te pakken.
