Alleenstaande moeder Chanda verdient niet veel als hulp in de huishouding, maar net genoeg om haar 14-jarige dochter Appu naar de middelbare school te kunnen sturen. Het is haar grote droom dat Appu later een beter leven zal hebben dan zijzelf gehad heeft. Maar eenmaal op school ontmoet Appu de 'verkeerde' mensen en laat al snel haar huiswerk versloffen.
