In 'War Machine' staat de hooggeplaatste generaal Glen McMahon centraal. McMahon, die diversen bijnamen heeft zoals oa. 'Glenimal' heeft een dodelijke reputatie en krijgt de leiding over de oorlog in Afghanistan. Om die oorlog voorgoed te kunnen winnen hanteert hij een totaal nieuwe en radicale aanpak.
