Lynn Brandt wordt mishandeld door haar man en besluit hem te verlaten en met haar twee kinderen te verhuizen naar een andere stad. Daar begint ze te werken als serveerster. In dezelfde stad woont ook Kevin. Zijn eigen bedrijf staat op het punt te sluiten, terwijl zijn vrouw een moeilijke zwangerschap heeft. Via het buurthuis ontmoet Kevin Lynns zoon Thomas en de twee raken bevriend. Dit leidt tot grote veranderingen in de levens van Lynn en Kevin.
