Architect Walter Stackhouse, die bij nacht een misdaad romanschrijver is, is vrij ongelukkig getrouwd met Clara, een succesvolle onroerend goed verkoopster. Wanneer Walter gefascineerd raakt door Melchior Kimmel, een boekhandelaar in New Jersey die verdacht wordt van de moord op zijn vrouw, begint hij te fantaseren hoe het zou zijn als hij zijn eigen vrouw zou vermoorden. Als Clara dood gevonden wordt lijkt Walter de hoofdverdachte wanneer hij het pad kruist van een achterbakse moordenaar en een vastberaden agent.
