Wanneer mijnwerker Charley 'Boomer' Baxter een reeks enorme ontploffingen in West Virginia veroorzaakt, schudt een gigantische aardbeving al snel de Noord-Atlantische Oceaan, waardoor een diepe seismische breuk wordt blootgelegd die zich over de hele lengte van het Noord-Amerikaanse continent uitstrekt. Samen met de seismologie-expert van de overheid, dr. Amy Lane, moet Boomer nu tegen de klok racen om de kloof te dichten die Amerika - en de hele wereld - in tweeën dreigt te scheuren.
