De intelligente en populaire Laura kan op haar zestiende al aan de universiteit beginnen. Maar die zomer verandert haar leven en dat van haar familie voorgoed. Wanneer ze wil leren paardrijden, ontmoet ze op de ranch Marty Fowler. De vrouw heeft al snel een grote invloed op Laura en brainwasht haar volledig. Laura besluit om haar ouders vaarwel te zeggen en een leven op te bouwen op de ranch. Carolyn, de moeder van Laura, probeert vijf jaar lang haar dochter uit de greep van Marty te krijgen.
